academic support
POISE is now offering academic support services for students, grades 1-8! The recent global crisis has created an even greater demand for engaging and enriching support programs, particularly for students living in the most disenfranchised areas of the nation. Our aim is to increase academic performance, test-taking readiness, confidence, and independence among lower-income communities. With a focus on skill-building, learning strategies, positive thinking and effort, we help students achieve their goals to move beyond the devastating flaws and effects of our current educational landscape.
POISE empowers young people to shift their perspective, and act towards self-improvement. Most importantly, we equip them with the tools needed to change the trajectory of their education. Our academic support programs are positioned to be fun, culturally relevant and accessible to any and every one who has internet access.
We tailor our services to meet your child's specific needs and objectives. All sessions require the purchase of a package except homework help. All packages are 4 sessions and include a free assessment. The following services are available:

Tutoring (Grades 3-8)
We provide academic support in all subjects, grades 3-8. An assessment is included to gauge what your child's particular needs are. The results are matched with information from their respective school teacher to ensure proper support. Parents/guardians receive a progress update after each session.
*Each session is an hour and fifteen minutes at $100 per package (4 sessions). Discounts are available for siblings and classmates.

Reading Skills (Grades 1-8)
Without a toolbox of reading strategies that can be applied to any text (or subject), students are being shortchanged in their education. To improve the effectiveness of children's reading, our lessons focus on both the content of a particular text, and specific techniques that build reading skills. We develop three specific skills: world solving, fluency and comprehension. Each skill is rated each session to track improvement and identify areas in need of growth. Additionally, all the content we introduce is culturally relevant to the populations we serve to maximize learning. It is of the utmost importance that our scholars see themselves in the academic work they do, and understand themselves as valuable and capable. With the blend of these techniques, your child's reading skills can improve up to 75% after four sessions.
*Each session is an hour and fifteen minutes at $150 per package (6 sessions). Discounts are available for siblings and classmates ($130/package for two students, $125 for up to four students a group.)

Homework Help (Grades 1-8)
The recent rise in education technology has completely shifted education leading to frustration, and most unfortunately, missed learning time. This lack of support will ultimately lead to an increase in education disparities that affect black and brown communities the most. Whether you need help navigating apps, (such as Zoom or Google Classroom), or your child needs help with a homework assignment or an upcoming project, POISE is here to help. Book a single session at your convenience!
*Each session is $27 for up to an hour of support. A free 5-minute consultation is included.
Learning Strategies & Study Skills (Grades 3-8)
With the limited amount of time that each class in school offers, it is impossible for every student to receive the individual attention they need to learn to the best of their ability. "Learning how to learn" is a competitive skill that has only been taught to the most privileged students. We utilize two practices to improve learning outcomes for children: practice testing and distributed practice.
Practice testing involves frequent informal testing to encourage students’ recall of the material from memory. Over time, this makes the classroom material “stick.” Distributed practice involves mastering a concept over time, rather than all at once. Spacing learning across weeks or months leads to better long-term gains in learning. Together, these techniques are guaranteed to improve learning outcomes. This is particularly suited for students in need of test prep.
*Each session is an hour and fifteen minutes at $100 per package (4 sessions). Discounts are available for siblings and classmates.

Sessions are available Monday-Friday 8am to 7pm and Saturdays 10am to 2pm.
