 THE MISSION

Our mission at POISE Academy is to empower young ladies ages 7 to 15 to be poised, dynamic, and powerful leaders of society by enhancing their self-awareness, skills, and intellect to build a personal image that will lead to success throughout their entire lives. Our girls deserve more support than formal education can provide, as well as a safe space to cultivate the leadership skills, emotional IQ, and social capital needed to compete and excel in the 21st century.

POISE Academy aims to appreciate and uplift girls, to counteract the social constructs that work to disempower them. Our curriculum is designed to shift their perspective on the way they see themselves, and the world around them. Increasing personal and social competence in young people enables them to better execute their goals successfully and thrive. Lastly, finding healthy, intentional ways to interact with peers is crucial to the success and mental health of our children. Invest in the hearts and minds of your young and join the movement today.

 Fall Curriculum Outline

POISE Academy's curriculum focuses heavily on personal growth, building a positive relationship with self, character development, and socio-emotional intelligence. A new theme is introduced every month as follows:

PART 1: skills for success

October 10th-October 25th

Planning, Organizing, and Managing

Emotional Intelligence Focus: Self-Awareness

There is a marked difference between students who plan ahead and those who don’t as planning and execution are key components of student success. Additionally, schools are not designed to consider unique student educational needs. Organization does not come easily to most students, and it requires a conscious effort and a great deal of planning. Much of the support children need to reach their fullest potential includes the development of executive functioning skills.

Executive functioning skills are essential self-regulating skills that we use every day including planning, organizing, time management, self-advocacy, and studying. Planning helps us live an organized existence by giving structure to our educational, work, and personal lives. In this course, participants will receive a schoolyear planner, and use it to learn how to organize, plan, and manage their own schedules. By gathering the information they need to focus on, students will better keep track of their assignments and activities, set personal goals, and enhance communication between their teachers and parents.

Part 2: Socially Savvy

November 1st-November 21st

Social Scenarios, Boundaries, and Self-Advocacy

Emotional Intelligence Focus: Relationships

Striking a conversation with people we’re not familiar with can be awkward and uncomfortable. In this course, students will discover how small talk, simple questions, and active listening can enhance social interactions. Participants will also be walked through various scenarios across different social settings that require critical thinking, self-advocacy, and conflict management skills. By having girls think critically about how they might interact in a given situation, they are proactively developing crucial social skills that will benefit all aspects of their lives whether personal, academic, or professional.

PART 3: Mental health is wealth

November 28th-December 13th

Common Mental Health Disorders, Wellness, and Self-Care

Emotional Intelligence Focus: Responsibility

Our mental health is directly impacted by our level of self-care. The more we exercise self-care, the healthier we are mentally, physically, and emotionally. In this course, girls will discover some of the most common mental health disorders as well as common wellness and self-care practices that almost any girl can incorporate into their daily lives. They will consider their own thinking, feelings, and actions to inform their own practices. Self-care not only benefits our self-confidence, self-esteem, emotions, and actions- it enhances our health and beauty too. Most of all, with increased rates of depression and anxiety among school-aged girls, developing tools to cope and therefore persevere is a must. We have the potential to create our own well-being and happiness when we simply know how to.

**Participants must have wifi access and Google Meet to participate.**

Studies at Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation, and Stanford found that 85% of future success depends on social skills. Adults with soft skills are more employable, more engaged in civic life, and more involved in their education. When we introduce habits of excellence early, children have a better chance of developing self-awareness which can be advantageous in any scenario. After attending POISE Academy, our young ladies will be better able to move effortlessly through any situation and among various groups of people.
